By S. Madigan

The majority of companies present with a business dress code that people must adhere to as part of their work contract. Typically, white-collar companies will require formal work attire; whereas, start-up companies and non-profit organizations tend to favor casual or semi-formal options. The style that is chosen can have a great influence on company culture, so it is essential that the correct dress code is implemented. Here are pros and cons to wearing casual work attire.

1. Staff Feel More Comfortable

Casual business attire is unmistakeably more comfortable than formal or semi-formal attire. Female employees, in particular, will not need to be concerned about uncomfortable high heels or hosiery, and males can remove the strangling tie if they wish to do so. When more comfortable, an individual is more likely to place their focus on the tasks at hand and show greater productivity because they are not focusing on restrictive clothing. This is a proven fact backed by several studies at different universities across the globe.

2. Casual Fashion Is Less Costly And Easier To Maintain

One problem that most people face when finding a new job is the need to purchase expensive “work clothes“. Not only are they loathe to wear the restrictive items, but they are upset about having to spend a large portion of their income on clothing they will not wear in any other setting. Casual clothing, however, is far less costly and can be more easily maintained removing the need for costly dry-cleaning bills. They are also easier to access being purchased in the average retail store and the individual will not have to spend hours scouring certain types of retailers for the professional clothing items.

Cons

1. Presenting The Incorrect Image To Customers

The dress code will influence a client's perception of the company; therefore, implementing a casual dress code will promote the appearance of a company with a casual attitude to work. In certain industries, this will be fine but in others, such as law firms or investment companies, this can hurt the business' brand and viability.

2. Casual Dress Results In A Casual Staff Attitude

While a casual dress code can help staff members feel more relaxed and comfortable, this can have a negative consequence in that the employees may behave in an unprofessional manner. Employees wearing casual clothing may begin to feel indifferent regarding the work and the level of productivity may fail instead of improving. Casual clothing may also change the attitude among employees where staff will treat each other in an unprofessional manner, and this can result in workplace discord.

In conclusion, the use of casual fashion for work attire can have benefits but it can also be disadvantageous. Using this information, one can determine if opting for casual work dress codes is the best option for one's specific company.
